Assignment submission format

  • A written report that explores and highlights key information on the technologies that could be utilised to develop, host and manage the website for Fitness Zilla.

The recommended word limit is 2,000–2,500 words, although you will not be penalised for exceeding the total word limit.

  • Solution design documents produced to meet the requirements of a given problem, including requirements specifications, visual and technical design documentation details of additional considerations
  • Development documentation, including implementation details and review processes, and refinements made to the website throughout development.

Note: You are required to make use of headings, paragraphs and subsections as appropriate, and all work must be supported with research and referenced using the Harvard referencing system.

ASSIGNMENT SCENARIO

Scenario

You work as a Junior Web Developer at an independent web-developing company, Webhnos Service Solutions that helps big and small organizations build their brand through innovative, clean, and easy to use websites with enhanced accessibility features. Webhnos Service Solutions specializes in developing custom-built websites to suit the unique needs and preferences of a business. They build engaging websites, factoring in the type of business and the industry of operation, demographics, the available budget, maintenance cost, and the short- and long-term objectives and goals of the client.

Your team’s main duty is to design and create websites. The team is responsible for the look of the website, the technical aspects such as performance, capacity, traffic, integrating graphics, and audio and video, in order to create content, server and client-side scripting and being able to work with operating systems, database and application servers.

Webhnos Service Solutions has been commissioned by Fitness Zilla to develop a new website that will promote the company and support some of its business operations. Fitness Zilla is a state of the art GYM, complete with equipment for cardio and strength training. In addition, they also provide Zumba and yoga classes in mornings and evenings. The gym has a large hall for zumba and yoga, a fully equipped gym, a sauna, steam room and changing and shower facilities.

The owner of Fitness Zilla, and your line manager have provided you with some additional information to help you design and create the website. This information should be used alongside any additional research you carry out.

Initial client requirements

Fitness Zilla has requested a website that will:

  • promote the gym
  • provide information about:
    • the different Zumba and yoga classes they teach
    • their classes and prices
  • allow customers to create an account to manage their memberships
  • provide social features (e.g. forums, social media integration)

Your Website will include the class schedules for Yoga and Zumba classes. Also you need to include a short description/ bio of the different instructors and private trainers. The user should be able to view details about the private trainers and ask for their availability, or make a booking for a particular class/ time slot.

ASSIGNMENT TASKS

Assignment Task

Activity 1

Write an evaluative report that explores the technologies that could be utilized to develop, host and manage the website for Fitness Zilla. The report should include the following.

  • Identification of the purpose and different types of DNS
  • An explanation of how domain names are organized and managed
  • An explanation of the relationships between hardware and software used to design, publish and access Fitness Zilla website, with consideration of:
    • communication protocols (e.g. HTTPS, FTP)
    • server hardware
    • operating systems
    • web server software (e.g. Apache, TomCat, IIS, Nginx).
  • A discussion of the capabilities and relationships of front-end and back-end website technologies and how they relate to the presentation and application layers
  • A discussion of the differences between online website creation tools and custom-built sites with consideration of:
    • design flexibility
    • performance
    • functionality
    • User Experience (UX)
    • User Interface (UI).

For a higher Grade the report also includes:

  • An analysis of how web development technologies and frameworks (e.g. HTML5, JSON, JQuery, REACT, Angular, Node.js) have had an impact on web design, functionality and management
  • A review of the influence of search engines on website performance
  • A review, supported by clear, well-documented evidence, of how to improve the index value of a website through SEO
  • An analysis of the impact of different tools and techniques available on custom-built website design and development

Further, you need to present a clear justification of the technologies, management services, tools and software chosen to realize a custom-built website.

Activity 2

Design, Develop and Test the Website: You are to design a multi-page website solution that will meet the needs of Fitness Zilla website. Your design documents should include:

  • a full set of client and user requirements, e.g. functional and non-functional requirements, user acceptance criteria
  • wireframes
  • interface designs
  • details of:
    • networking and hosting considerations
    • security features
    • how accessibility and inclusivity guidelines will be implemented.

You should then use your design documents to implement a multi-page website that will meet the needs of Fitness Zilla.

Your implementation should include the following.

  • A branded, multi-page website for Fitness Zilla, supported with realistic content from your additional research

Additionally, for a higher grade you could Prepare an evaluation report that presents-

  • Justification of the chosen management services, tools and software from the range of options presented in Activity 1 that were used ultimately in the development of Fitness Zilla
  • An evaluation of the design and development process of making Fitness Zilla website, compared to the original design document
  • An evaluation of any specific technical challenges faced creating Fitness Zilla website

Activity 3

Create and use a test plan to review the performance and design of a multipage website

  • You will now create a suitable test plan for the site. The test plan should identify key areas that cover both the functionality and performance of the developed website
  • Also, carry out testing and document your results for the final developed multi-page website

For a higher grade you could:

  • present an Analysis of the QA process, including a review of how it was implemented during the design and development stages of the multi-page website for Fitness Zilla.
  • An evaluation of the results of the Test Plan and the overall success of the website
  • A list of recommended improvements for Fitness Zilla website; this could be based on client feedback and the results of testing.
